In this event, Professor Dermot Hodson will talk about his new book on the history of the European Union since 1992. He will be joined in conversation by Dr Ben Worthy (Director of Birkbeck's Centre for British Political Life).
A Professor of Political Economy and Digital Technologies at Loughborough University London, Dermot Hodson was previously Professor of Political Economy at Birkbeck and an economist at the European Commission's Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs. He has published widely on European integration and governance and written on European affairs for the Guardian, the Irish Times, Politico and the Washington Post.
Circle of Stars: A History of the EU and the People Who Made It (Yale University Press, 2023) tells the story of how the EU survived three turbulent decades since the Maastricht Treaty entered into force. Challenging the idea that the EU is governed by faceless technocrats, it argues that the Union was driven by Heads of State or Government who stood together in times of turmoil despite fierce pressure from right wing populists. The resulting tensions came to a head over Brexit, the book shows, but not to an end.
